Menopause fitness unleashed - (minus the treadmill).

It was time to take action! Being a lady of a certain age, and seeing the changes in my body, I decided to work with a Personal Trainer to help me tone up and lose weight; I found George and began my journey. I have been pretty much blown away by his advice, knowledge and mostly that I don't have to live on a treadmill to see results! I invited George to write a blog for my website, and here it is.

Since working as a Personal Trainer, my coaching capabilities have evolved to encompass a diverse range of clientele.

In the last year I have had the pleasure of working with many female clients that I know are going through the menopause.

This has been a learning experience for me, but more so for them. My interest in fitness stems from the basis of overall health & wellness. That is; to create and maintain a balanced lifestyle which is complimented by physical exercise.

What I have learnt is that unfortunately, many people (in this particular instance women) have radical misconceptions about the whole process of incorporating a sustainable and enjoyable exercises routine into their life!

One of the most common thought processes which leads to a negative and unproductive mindset when entering a gym or even during their first time inside a gym, is that cardio is the only and best way to lose weight.

This could not be further from the truth. I have worked work Debbie now for a while now, and from the very first session I could sense her surprise when I guided her though some resistance exercises to help strengthen and tone her body.

What followed, according to her, was an increase heart rate, feeling of exertion in a safe and beneficial way, and most importantly that she was ENJOYING the plethora of exercisers and machines which I showed her during the sessions!

The beauty of resistance training is that it can be progressed, regressed, tweaked, manipulated, or even replaced with numerous other exercises until we find the one which suits you best; in terms of enjoyment, safety, and health benefits.

Debbie started to use different muscles in her body as I taught her proper lifting techniques, and we progressed through each session at her pace. This only intensified her with her enthusiasm to book in another session with me and learn some new ways to lose weight and tone up without walking on the treadmills for hours!

I had this same experience too many years ago. It is like an awakening of the mind and body, working together and being thankful that it is able to be used and improved! Dopamine through effort creates a great mindset and can set you up for the day of even the week. This builds confidence and aids with mental health, creatine an optimal balance of hormones which then aids with the progress of menopause.

Reduction in the stress hormone cortisol and better sleep quality are other factors which can be improved through resistance training, and this in turn increases oestrogen.

Cardio can be monotonous, repetitive, and most people just find it boring or uncomfortable. On the contrary, I can find multiple resistance exercises that will burn fat while keeping the client engaged and in a great winning mindset, building confidence in their ability through each repetition and set that we do together.

But that’s not it. In fact it doesn’t even scratch the surface of these benefits and preconceived notions which couldn’t be further from the truth.

I touched briefly on mindset, but this is HUGE for anyone that begins to incorporate a healthy exercise routine into their lifestyle.

If you’re interested in learning more about how I can help you achieve your fitness goals and create a more balanced and healthy lifestyle, please feel free to give me a message and I can book you in for a free consultation.
