How Drinking Water Can Help Weight Loss

When I ask my weight loss clients how much water they drink, I often get the same answer …. “not as much as I should”.
Drinking water plays a powerful role when it comes to your weight loss journey. We all know that water is essential for a healthy life, but often is overlooked when we are trying to shed the pounds.
Here’s a few things to consider:
Boosts Metabolism
Drinking water can temporarily boost your metabolism. You can increase your metabolic rate up to 30% (for apx an hour) just by drinking 500ml of water. When processing the water, your body has to work harder and therefore burns more calories.
Helps Control Appetite
We’ve all heard at some point or another that feelings of hunger may actually be thirst; so, reaching for water first is always a good idea. Although we know this, rarely do we do it, even if we are desperate to drop a few pounds. Drinking water before meals can help reduce the amount of food you eat and reduce your calorie intake.
Replaces High-Calorie Beverages
Many of my clients tell me that they find water boring and choose fizzy drinks instead. You can naturally flavour your water by adding various fruits, cucumber, mint or ginger. Get creative! By choosing water instead of traditional fizzy drinks can significantly cut the calories, without cutting the flavour, (along with the added benefit of losing the chemicals and artificial sweeteners if choosing “diet” drinks).
Aids Digestion
Simply drinking water and staying hydrated can help prevent constipation and encourage a healthy gut. Both of these are important for weight loss. Being hydrated is a key component for your digestion and helps prevent bloating too.
Forget to drink?
Having a busy lifestyle can interrupt or lead us to "forget" to drink water throughout the day. This is an easy fix. Simply have either a glass or water bottle in plain view during the day as a reminder and refill as needed. Refillable water bottles are available in many shops, some are printed with reminders down the side, some are narrower at the bottom to fit in a cup holder and many have straws. There's bound to be one to fit your needs. I personally fill mine up every morning, add some ice, pieces of fruit and just keep it with me. It goes in my car and stays cold all day.

Conclusion
Water is accessible, and one of the quickest, simplest ways to help with dropping those extra pounds. Obviously, it’s not a magic wand, by simply melting the pounds away, but it does play a crucial supporting role in your weight loss journey. If you’re serious about being healthier and slimmer, then reaching for a bottle of water is a great place to start.
